Monochromatic infrared energy (e.g. anodyne therapy) uses infrared light to promote health. The light is provided by a tool placed directly on the body.
It’s not clear what effects monochromatic infrared energy has on the body, but there’s interest in its use for improving blood flow and generating heat to relieve pain. It is usually used in combination with physical therapy.
People sometimes use monochromatic infrared energy for osteoarthritis, nerve or muscle pain, a disorder that causes leg discomfort and an irresistible urge to move the legs (restless legs syndrome or RLS), and many other conditions, but there is no good scientific evidence to support these uses.
